For more than six decades, the DeBartolo name has been a legend in the real estate industry. The Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation, founded in the 1950’s by legendary entrepreneur Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. pioneered the mall concept and built some of the most well-known shopping meccas in the nation.

Through the 1960’s and 1970’s the DeBartolo dominance in shopping mall development stretched from the Midwest, through the Northeast and southward into the large metropolitan cities in Florida and Louisiana. 

The trend of success for the DeBartolo family continued into the 1980’s and 1990’s with an unprecedented upward turn.  In addition to the extremely successful shopping mall business, The DeBartolo family, under the leadership of Edward J. DeBartolo Jr., purchased the San Francisco 49er’s, National Football League franchise.  During a thirteen year span, from 1982 to 1995, the 49er’s won five (5) Super Bowl Championships to become one of sports all-time most successful dynasties.

Mr. DeBartolo also achieved the pinnacle of hockey greatness in the early 1990’s as well.  The National Hockey League’s, Pittsburgh Penguins won two Lord Stanley Cup Championships during his tenure as owner of the team in 1990-91 and 1991-92.

As the dawn of the new century began, the DeBartolo Property Group (DPG) was founded to manage the real estate holdings of the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation.  Concurrently, Mr. Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. became DPG’s Chairman of the Board.

In addition to the legendary success in shopping mall development and world championship sports franchises, the DeBartolo legacy includes successful ventures in hotel property management, regional restaurant development and entertainment venue ownership.
